McIlroy built his body under the direction of exercise physiologist Stephen McGregor, Ph.D. Though Rory’s body-fat composition is an enviable 8.5 percent, he’s not extreme in his diet.

“He makes the right choices,” McGregor says. “But it’s not cutting anything out of his diet. He’ll go and have a burger.”

McIlroy’s huge fan base extends from smitten young women to motherly types, from guys envious of his power to old men who are reminded of classic swings of yore.

“He’s got a nice way about him with people,” says Jack Nicklaus. ”I see so many times he’ll stop and talk with a kid, or talk with somebody, be pleasant. He’s never too important.”

Though his upper body strength is impressive, the true sources of McIlroy’s power are his legs and the entire kinetic chain, including hips and core. (Note: No real golf clubs were harmed in the making of this photograph.)

Once McIlroy had eliminated imbalances in his body and strengthened his legs and core, McGregor put more emphasis on plyometrics, including medicine ball work and box jumps.

Total-body exercises like the deadlift are an essential part of McIlroy’s regimen. He carries an entire year’s worth of workouts on his phone, and is in the gym nearly every day.
