On a daily basis, your core's main job is to stabilize your spine. The many muscles between your hips and your shoulders hold you steady while you stand, sit, mow the lawn, carry groceries, do pushups, or even walk. At the same time, they prevent you from potentially spine-damaging motions like rotation, flexion, and extension.
That's what makes the body saw one of the best moves you can do for your midsection. It trains your core the way it's designed to function. "The exercise forces you to brace against movement as your limbs move around you—just like in real life," says Sam Stauffer, expert coach for Men's Health Thrive in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "As your hands and feet move farther away from your body, your stabilizing muscles have to kick into overdrive to prevent any motion in your spine."
Since you're holding your core in a fixed position the entire time, you won't get the same "burn" in your abs that you would get from crunches, says Stauffer. However, that doesn't mean the move isn't working. If you do this often with proper form, it'll make your core solid and strong, and make your abs pop, he says. Watch the video above to learn how to perform the body saw with perfect form.
